The story is set in the village called Peepli where resides Natha, farmer who does not have the money to repay the loan from government. When he hears of the Government’s plan to pay a huge sum of money to the families of farmers who had committed suicide, he also decides to go the same way to rid his family of his debt.. But when a local journalist Rakesh, publishes an article about Natha, which is then picked up by national news channels, politicians come under the spotlight and the entire nation waits with bated breath for Natha to perform the deed. How a poor farmer’s plight becomes a tool in the hands of the media and politicians for personal gains is what Peepli Live is primarily about.
The gloomy issue of farmers' suicide has been brilliantly executed in a light-hearted satire. It's entertaining and at the same time poignant. At no point does it become preachy or goes over-the-top in its narration. Although the core issue is the farmer's suicide, Anusha Rizvi touches many a pain areas through her excellent script and narrative. It takes a dig on the news hungry media, scheming politicians and the complex government schemes. It literally shows how politicians and media don't want to address the issue but want to encash it for their own benefit.
One of the most impressive things about Peepli Live is the incredible acting talent that has been assembled. Most of the cast, including Natha, are all new or relatively unknown faces and each one lends such sincerity and conviction to their roles that you remain content just watching them interact with one another. Especially worth noting are Natha’s wife Dhaniya and his mother, two women who give the saas-bahu's internal strife a whole new ferocious dimension.
Over all the film is among the most courageous you have seen in a long time. , so do pay a visit to Peepli.
