Greenshirts have been turned golden in the final of the 16th Asian Games men’s hockey event beyond the expectations of hockey fans, lovers and critics when they thrashed Malaysia with convincing 2-0 at Guangzhou, China.
Pakistan hockey team after winning the 8th gold medal after twenty years in Asiad has triggered the wide-scale celebrations and festivities across the country. It’s long ago when Pakistan lastly acquired the victory in the World Cup 1994 held in Sydney.
Pakistan not only won the women cricket final but also walked away with gold medals in squash at the sports event. It is, of course, great news for a panic-stricken and war weary nation who have only been at the receiving end of bad news and social set-backs. Pakistani players have once again shown that they are still capable of bouncing back anytime and anywhere in the world. They also presented a positive image of the country to the world of sports. Hence they must be appreciated with warm wishes and an ecstatic welcome. I also want to bring this to the notice of people who know the least about Pakistan and call attention to fact that most of the sportsmen are deprived of sufficient sports facilities in Pakistan.
They play either on roads, in public parks or often near the railway lines. The sportsmen take advantage of all such places. Despite these hurdles and difficulties, Pakistan has given birth to some of the greatest players in the world such as Imran Khan, Javaid Miandad, Wasim Akram, Jahangir Khan, Jan Sher Khan, Samiullah Kaleem Ullajh and so on.
Now it is the foremost duty of the Pakistani government to provide a healthier sports environment in the country which facilitates the sportsmen at the grass root level. The players who uphold the country’s flag must be rewarded with sufficient cash prizes and honour.
